Why We Use Temperaments

1.Temperaments aren't modern psychology they're ancient Catholic wisdom.
Long before Myers-Briggs or Enneagram, the Church understood the four temperaments: choleric, melancholic, sanguine, and phlegmatic. Saints and spiritual masters used them to guide souls.
2.St. Thomas Aquinas taught that knowing your temperament helps conquer vice.
Why? Because grace builds on nature. Understanding your temperament reveals where you're most vulnerable and where you're most gifted.
3.The four temperaments have shaped spiritual direction for centuries.
From monastic orders to missionary saints, spiritual directors have long used temperaments to personalize advice, penance, and prayer.
4.Many saints showed strong temperamental traits and used them for holiness.
- Choleric: St. Paul (driven, bold)
- Melancholic: St. Thérèse (deep, reflective)
- Sanguine: St. Philip Neri (joyful, spontaneous)
- Phlegmatic: St. Joseph (steady, peaceful)
SaintsPath helps you follow in their footsteps by temperament.
5.Not knowing your temperament is like using a map with no legend.
You may get somewhere eventually but you'll get there faster, holier, and with fewer wrong turns if you know how God designed you.
6.Temperaments help you understand why some spiritual books move you and others don't. SaintsPath adapts the wisdom of saints to how you process, reflect, and grow.7.The early Church Fathers and desert monks saw the temperaments in Scripture.
They connected the temperaments to the four Gospels, the apostles, and even the seasons of the soul.
8.The Church never says 'one-size-fits-all' for growing in holiness.
That's why SaintsPath offers a custom approach to reading and applying the writings of the saints starting with your God-given temperament.
9.Temperament is not personality it's your spiritual wiring.
It's not about labeling you. It's about understanding how God designed your heart to love Him and how you can cooperate with grace.
10.SaintsPath is the first platform that brings this ancient Catholic wisdom into the digital age. Personalized journeys through the writings of the saints adapted to your age, temperament, and spiritual needs. The saints didn't all walk the same path. Neither should you.
